About the Talk

Puerto Rican filmmaker and interdisciplinary artist Glorimar Marrero Sánchez works across fiction, hybrid cinema, installation, and photography to explore the intersections of colonialism, environment, embodiment, and health in the Caribbean. This event will feature excerpts from her award-winning debut feature La Pecera (The Fishbowl), which premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and became the first Puerto Rican film nominated for the Goya Award for Best Ibero-American Film, followed by presentations of her current projects.

Marrero Sánchez’s work engages the ongoing health and environmental crisis in Vieques, where decades of U.S. military activity left a legacy of contamination and chronic illness. Her interdisciplinary project UNDERWATER / BAJO AGUA examines these afterlives through questions of ecological justice, colonial violence, and community survival.

A response by Ana Ugarte, Assistant Professor of Comparative Literature, will follow the presentation and lead into audience discussion.
