SUMMARY:Annual Edward W. Said Lecture - Alexander Weheliye: "Schwarz-Sein: Black Life Beyond the Human"
DESCRIPTION:Date and Time: Friday\, May 14\, 2021 from 12:00-1:30 PM PST\nSpeaker: Alexander Weheliye\, Northwestern University\nModerator: Shu-mei Shih\, Inaugural edward w. said professor of comparative literature\, UCLA\nOpening Remarks: David Schaberg\, Dean of Humanities\, UCLA\n  \nCo-sponsored by the Edward W. Said Professorship in Comparative Literature and “Comparative Thinking in the Age of Black Lives Matter” Lecture Series Committee of the Department of Comparative Literature. \n  \nAbout the Lecture \nThis webinar will focus on some of the different ways Blackness operates as the ontological mattering of ungendering. Conceptualizing Blackness as integral to being as such\, the lecture imagines how its multiple manifestations matter and operate both through and beyond the category of the human. Drawing on examples from the history of science\, popular culture\, and Edward Said’s thinking\, Weheliye highlights how Blackness offers openings for different formings and matterings beyond modern\, western Man. \n  \nAbout the Speakers \nAlexander Ghedi Weheliye is professor of African American Studies at Northwestern University where he teaches Black literature and culture\, critical theory\, social technologies\, and popular culture. He is the author of Phonographies: Grooves in Sonic Afro-Modernity (2005) and Habeas Viscus: Racializing Assemblages\, Biopolitics\, and Black Feminist Theories of the Human (2014). Currently\, he is working on two projects. The first\, Feenin: R&B’s Technologies of Humanity\, offers a critical history of the intimate relationship between R&B music and technology since the late 1970s. The second\, Black Life/SchwarzSein\, situates Blackness as an ungendered ontology of unbelonging. \n  \n  \nShu-mei Shih is the inaugural Edward W. Said Professor of Comparative Literature\, and Professor of Asian Languages and Cultures & Asian American Studies at UCLA. She is also the President of the American Comparative Literature Association. \n  \n  \n  \n\nDavid Schaberg is Dean of Humanities and Professor in Asian Languages & Cultures at UCLA. He is also a past Chair of Asian Languages & Cultures and Co-Director of the Center for Chinese Studies.

SUMMARY:Lecture Series - UC President's Postdoctoral Fellow Dr. Adrián I. P-Flores
DESCRIPTION:“Traversing Suicide: The Unthought of Blackness in the Suicidological Imagination”\n  \nCo-sponsored with the Comparative Literature Program in Experimental Critical Theory\n  \nRSVP HERE\n  \nAbout the Lecture \nThis talk poses a fundamental question: “Is Black suicide possible?” This question aims to excavate\, within the contemporary field of suicidology\, the systematic riveting of blackness to what afropessimism calls “the position of the unthought”—a position hewed by an antiblack violence that clears the existential horizon for human beings to emerge from history as always-already available for Being\, for death\, for a future. This question strives to unsettle the universality and neutrality of the subject or being of suicidality in the “suicidological imagination” to the extent that its universality necessitates the neutralization of being’s racial inscription as conterminously human and non-Black. In this talk\, the fundamental question of Black suicide is opposed to leading questions about suicide causation and prevention—questions that are doubly encumbered by the essentialism of “premature death” and the moral imperative to preserve the sanctity of human life—which obviate posing suicide as a problem for thought. To think this problematic\, it will be argued\, requires grappling with suicide as an architectonic idiom for modern\, racialized Man\, the highest form of Being—and the locus of morality and tragedy—that\, under the imperative of antiblackness\, organizes our very desire for existence. \n  \nAbout the Speaker \nAdrián I. P-Flores is the UC President’s Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Comparative Literature at UCLA. He earned his doctorate in Gender & Women’s Studies from The University of Arizona. Flores is currently working on a book manuscript\, What Is Suicide? Entanglements of Philosophy and Literature in the “Afterlife of Slavery.”  What Is Suicide? examines the production of the modern subject through the antiblack racial logics of “suicide.”
