SUMMARY:Humanists @ Work: Graduate Career Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Our Riverside Workshop is November 13\, 2017 at the Riverside Art Museum. \n\n\nAPPLY FOR A TRAVEL GRANT \nREGISTER FOR WORKSHOP \n\nWORKSHOP SCHEDULE \n8:00–8:45 AM: Breakfast \n8:45–9:00 AM: Welcome \n9:00–10:30 AM: Stories from the Field \nFour UC humanities PhDs share their stories as humanists at work in the world. \nMagdalena Edwards\, PhD\nWriter\, Translator\, Actor\, Director\, Producer\nPresident | Zoom & Emar Productions\nContributing Editor | LA Review of Books \nMaggie Gover\, PhD\nDirector\, Graduate Student Professional and Academic Development | UC Riverside \nToni Guglielmo\, PhD\nAssociate Director |  Getty Leadership Institute \nDavid Palter\, PhD\nSenior Associate | Workforce Development at Silicon Valley Leadership Group \n10:30–11:00 AM: Break \n11:00 AM–12:30 PM: Getting Started with ImaginePhD \nImaginePhD is a free\, confidential\, online tool designed to open conversations about career possibilities with humanities PhDs. Join Annie Maxfield\, Design & Development lead for the ImaginePhD project\, to reflect on your skills\, interests\, and values and make sense of results. Participants will learn how to leverage this tool effectively for themselves and peers while providing feedback and suggestions for the next iteration of the project. Please bring your laptop. \n12:30–1:30 PM Lunch \n1:30–2:50 PM: Disrupting⁄ive Expertise \nHumanities expertise are understood to be beyond quantification/measurement. Nonetheless\, in making a case for humanist expertise – without knowing who we are addressing–we do not want to reproduce the conversations currently happening around the transferrable skills of the PhD\, with their emphasis on “collaboration\,” “communication\,” etc.\, that tend to follow a logic of equations. So\, even as we accept that humanities expertise (especially the capacity for critical thinking) is essentially unquantifiable\, we end up asking: What does your PhD equal? What is your PhD worth? How can you translate your degree into X? In this session\, we would like to interrogate the assumptions built into the idea of humanities expertise by asking: how can equations – \nAdditive\, like \nClassroom instruction  + lesson preparation  = curriculum design \nSubtractive\, like \nDissertation — intellectual foci = project management. \n– be disrupted? \nWe also wonder: \n\nWhat does your PhD disrupt?\nDoes professonalization make room for disruption?\nHow does a PhD inform the way we look at/accommodate to/participate in/disrupt the world?\n\n2:50–3:15 PM: Coffee Break and Networking \n3:15–3:30 PM: Meditation Exercise \n3:30–5:00 PM: “Unbecoming Academic”  \nFor most of those who have devoted the better part of a decade to earning a PhD in the humanities\, a doctoral degree and the experience of earning it holds a deep\, inherent value. And yet\, higher education struggles to articulate the nature of that value\, often resorting to traditional economic notions of earnings and transferrable skills.  In this session\, we will explore the concept of value as it is defined within multiple disciplines and contexts to develop a study of humanistic inquiry and career diversity. Underlying this approach is Peter Bansel’s idea of “unbecoming academic” and the attendant question of how we define the value of an academic degree as we “unbecome” academics at work in the world. \n5:00 PM: Closing Remarks \n
