SUMMARY:The Trouble with Ghosts | Book talk with Martine Beugnet and Kriss Ravetto-Biagioli | Program in Experimental Critical Theory
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, October 30\, 2026\n4:30 pm\nKaplan Hall Room #348 (third floor)\n415 Portola Plaza\nLos Angeles\, CA 90095\nIn person \n  \nREGISTER TO ATTEND \n  \nCo-sponsored by UCLA Cinema and Media Studies and the Department of Comparative Literature.  \n  \nAbout the Talk\nSo commonplace is the white sheet with two cut out holes for eyes that we tend to forget what is so strange about the ghost. It is a liminal figure whose trajectory is unstable: it may be said to  return with a vengeance or aimlessly linger between a past that once or never was and some ominous\, if not inevitable\, common future in which everything that lives will eventually die. As an entity it is betwixt and between the unnatural\, the supernatural\, and the imaginary. Yet\, this curious figure connects the incompatible worlds of the living with the dead. However\, those ghosts that make their presence known through various types of audiovisual media cannot be contained within the confines of the haunted house nor can they be personalized as conventional ghost stories do. They may not even be identifiable as a distinct entity.  Rather\, they may appear as an interruption in modes of communication or the transfer of information\, a glitch in the system\, or some overwhelming feeling of dread. \n  \nThe Trouble With Ghosts offers a study of the troubling politics of ghosts. Because ghost stories have been proliferating everywhere\, we have selected what we consider to be emblematic films\, television shows\, installation artworks\, and social media trends that help us illustrate the troubling concepts they bring to bear. While the ghost story is often considered a subcategory of the horror genre\, we are not interested in horror. The ghosts we are interested in are the “reflexive” kind\, the kind that asks us to think deeply about how media envision or extend an unhuman (ghostly) gaze; that forces us to consider just how demons can take hold of (possess or dispossess) our being; force us to distinguish between the person as they existed and the ghost that affects us in uncanny ways; that makes us understand how the ghost can itself be turned into a possession; or how the living can be ghosted (and made to disappear altogether). \n  \nAbout the Speakers\nMartine Beugnet is a Professor of Visual Studies at Université de Paris Cité and a member of ECHELLES Research Institute. She has written for Screen\, NRFTS\, Arts\, InMedia amongst other journals. Books include Claire Denis (M.U.P\, 2004)\, Proust at the Movies (2005)\, with Marion Schmid\, Cinema and Sensation: French Film and the Art of Transgression (E.U.P\, 2012)\, and co-edited Indefinite Visions: Cinema and the Attractions of Uncertainty with A.Cameron and A.Fetveit (E.U.P\, 2017). Le cinéma et ses doubles (Bord de l’Eau)\, on the circulation of the film image came out in 2021. Blur\, on the history and aesthetics of blur in film\, was published in English by Fordham University Press in 2025.  \n  \nKriss Ravetto-Biagioli is Professor of Film\, Television and Digital Media at the University of California\, Los Angeles. Her work focuses on representations and theorizations of violence in film\, media\, and social media. She is the author of The Unmaking of Fascist Aesthetics (University of Minnesota Press\, 2001)\, Mythopoetic Cinema: On the Ruins of European Identity (Columbia University Press\, 2017)\, Digital Uncanny (Oxford University Press\, 2019) and completed a co-authored book project with Martine Beugnet entitled The Trouble with Ghosts (forthcoming Oxford University Press\, 2027). \nProfessor Ravetto-Biagioli will present The Trouble With Ghosts film series at the Hammer Musem. \nParking for Campus Visitors\nTHERE IS NO FREE PARKING AT UCLA.
