DESCRIPTION:[Event Canceled Due to Campus Closure] \nPlease join the Departments of Comparative Literature and Slavic\, East European\, and Eurasian Languages and Cultures on Monday\, May 11th at 5:00 p.m. for a lecture from Professor Maureen Freely\, University of Warwick\, entitled\, “DRAGOMAN: Translators in the World.” This event is part of the 7th Annual Michael Henry Heim Memorial Lecture in Translation and Translation Studies. The lecture will take place at Kaplan Hall 193 and a light reception will follow. Please RSVP for the event at this link. \nThe Michael Henry Heim Memorial Lecture in Translation and Translation Studies is an annual lecture in memory of Michael Heim to continue his legacy. Professor Heim was a pioneer in translation studies\, which is now an area of considerable significance to the field of comparative literature. He is remembered by his colleagues\, students and friends as a world-class scholar\, a model pedagogue and a devoted mentor\, generous in his commitment to a communication and understanding across languages and cultures\, giving pride of place to translation. \nThis year’s featured lecturer will be Maureen Freely. Maureen Freely is a writer with seven novels to her name and many other strings to her bow.  Well known as a translator of the Turkish Nobel Laureate Orhan Pamuk\, she has also brought into English several classics and works by Turkey’s rising stars.  For many years she worked as a journalist in London\, writing about literature\, social justice\, and human rights.  As chair of the Translator’s Association and more recently as President and Chair of English PEN\, she has campaigned for writers and freedom of expression internationally.  She teaches at the University of Warwick.
